ABSTRACT
The Indian Mineral Leasing Act of 1938 required Tribal approval for any mineral leases. In 1977 the Council placed a moratorium on leasing and in 1979 enacted a permanent ban on mineral leasing and exploration. The Traditionalists pressed for discussion of the most crucial points of integration between Hopis and the nation-state: the Claims Commission case, mineral leasing, and the Hopi-Navajo land dispute. Nagata noted Moenkopi residents' participation in national institutions and in wage work, but called its economic integration into the market economy "marginal" due to the Government's control of land capital through the reservation system. The input of minerals and the output of an industrialized economy are functionally related magnitudes. Multilineal evolution refers to social and cultural adaption, to changes through time that each group of people in a particular physical environment make in order to adjust to material conditions.
