ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the immediate and secondary consequences of that split for Communist Party of Yugoslavia (CPY) rhetoric and the party's overall approach to the construction of socialism. The party's immediates reaction to the split, however, was far from coherent and reflected the confusion and fear that many party leaders clearly felt as they contemplated their future without the aid and support of the Soviet Union. The party apparatus not only persecuted those members of the party and society who openly or secretly supported the Cominform resolution but also applied blatantly coercive measures to all potential opponents of the party leadership both in and outside the CPY. While CPY leaders tended to ignore the specific content of the Cominform resolution, they were quick to publicize Soviet claims about the role of the Red Army in the liberation of Yugoslavia. Moreover, even internal party discussions of the conflict revealed uncertainty about the appropriate treatment of the Soviet Union.
