ABSTRACT

Ae-sŏn is a teacher at a Chongryun middle school in Tokyo. She is a second-generation Korean. I met her in the course of my fieldwork in the early 1990s at one of the Chongryun rallies commemorating a North Korean state holiday. A group of students gave a wonderful poetry recital in the second part of the rally, and I wanted to talk to the teacher who organized it. After the program, I went backstage, where I found a petite, slender woman in her mid-thirties. This was Ae-sŏn.
