ABSTRACT

This chapter compares literacy in the nation with literacy in Mexico Megacity and with the state of Chiapas, the state with the lowest literacy rate in Mexico, and then illustrates variation in literacy among various areas of Mexico Megacity. It examines educational enrollment and attainment by several different age categories. The chapter also examines socioeconomic variation in 1990 among various delegations and municipios of Mexico Megacity. It utilizes 1990 Mexican census data to illustrate the Non-Catholic and other religious segments in the metropolitan complex. The chapter briefly analyzes criminal charge patterns-misdemeanors, robbery, homicides, and criminal sentences for the Federal District in 1993. Although not mapped, higher education averaged 17 percent in the Federal District in 1990, which compares to a national average of 9 percent. The major indigenous language subgroups in Mexico Megacity are the Mixteco, Nahautl, Otomi, and Zapoteco language speaking. The religion proportions for the State of Mexico are comparable to the Federal District.
