ABSTRACT

This chapter identifies and discusses the important issues for the growth and development of Mexico. It summarizes and draws out the larger outcomes and asks what the policy implications are for Mexico. The chapter starts by discussing Mexico's population growth. Mexico has undergone a huge demographic shift over the past 40 years, moving from a higher fertility, younger, more rural, and less economically productive society to a demographically slowing, somewhat older, much more urban, and more economically productive one. It examines what has led to the enlarged role of Mexican migrants in the United States and how this relates to the world economy themes. The chapter examines the trends of decentralization and privatization. It outlines the major trends in the key export sectors of oil, tourism, and maquiladoras. The chapter points to the growth of these sectors and to the successes realized as well as the problems and detriments encountered.
