ABSTRACT

Motolinia was a millenarian, believing that the mass conversions were the prelude to the Second Coming. Belief in Providence prompted the friar to report enthusiastically and hopefully on the Nahuas’ desire to be good Christians. The Nahua leaders of Tlaxcala would certainly project this image during the sixteenth century because it helped to bolster their already elevated status due to their assistance in the conquest of Tenochtitlan. The procession left from the choir and organ chapel with many singers and to the music of flutes in concert with the chorus, trumpets, drums, and large and small bells. All of this was played together at the entrance and exit of the church which made it seem all the more like heaven on earth.
