ABSTRACT
Despite the dynamics of social mobility, social classes actually try to reproduce and maintain themselves through a process known as social reproduction. Rituals, networks, and manipulation of political power are means by which the more privileged social classes attempt to reproduce themselves. Americans who want to think about it are faced with an uncomfortable dilemma. On the one hand, one can argue that, at least in theory and ideal, the emphasis on quantitative, measurable, and objective performance criteria has resulted in a successful economic system that until a few decades ago was second to none. On the other hand, such an economic system, in creating a division between winners and losers, leaves many people far behind and deprived in a nation of plenty. The feminist movement has done much to raise awareness of the special plight of women in the United States today.
