ABSTRACT

The discussion of the clinical encounter focuses on medical aspects of kanbing—that is, the knowledge and practice of doctors. This chapter presents three published cases with the intention of referring to them throughout the discussion of the clinical encounter. It describes diagnosis and treatment principle of three cases: Spring Warm case, Foetal Death case and Stomachache case. Spring Warm case, is of an acute febrile illness in which an unusually nuanced treatment was immediately effective in relieving the symptoms. Foetal Death case, describes two situations in which foetuses died in utero, the former being easily treated with a classic prescription and the latter becoming a major challenge to Chinese medical methods. Stomachache case, which involves an ulcer, demonstrates certain ways in which Chinese medical diagnosis and treatment differ from biomedical methods.
