ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book talks about the contemporary Chinese medicine. It suggests the symbolic and ideological riches to be found in the literature and practice of traditional medicine. The book describes the many social implications of the practice of the clinical encounter into any pretense at a sociology of Chinese medicine. In privileging a certain "native point of view," that of doctors of traditional Chinese medicine working in an urban clinic, it have not departed from long-held biases of cultural anthropology. The book aims to totalize the insights gained from a study of the discursive practices of Chinese doctors into "deep structures" of Chinese thought or stable attributes of "Chinese culture". It describes the discourses of traditional Chinese medicine organized around the idea that the clinical encounter can be seen as a form of practical logic.
