Manypropositionscanbecharacterizedasbuiltfromotherpropositions insuchawaythatthetruthvalueofthecompoundisuniquelydeterminedbythetruthvaluesofthecomponents.Wefindthiskindofstructure,e.g.,inthepropositionthatMarsisaplanetwhichhasnosatellites, whichcanbecharacterizedasbuiltfromthepropositionsthatMarsisa planetandthatMarshassatellitesinsuchawaythatthecompoundis trueifthefirstcomponentistrueandthe.secondfalse,andfalseotherwise.Whenapropositioncanbecharacterizedalongtheselines,we shallsaythatitisatruth-functionalcompound.
