ABSTRACT

In this chapter I again look at the uses of writing in a village where it was recently introduced. I then consider the significance of writing for the way villagers evaluate the Western type of education that, for them, is above all concerned with teaching literacy skills. This evaluation is inevitably in terms of their own folk theories about what type of knowledge is appropriate for different stages of life. As a result, what the villagers want from education seems totally at odds with the original purpose of the type of education they are given.
