ABSTRACT
In this short chapter I look at how French is used by Malagasy peasants when addressing their cattle or when drunk. Their use of French, which the peasants consider totally foreign, is linked to the fact that it implies a type of hierarchical relation, which they associate with the colonial period and which they find difficult to express in their own language.
