ABSTRACT

The food and nutrition system operates within two major contexts: the biophysical and the sociocultural. The biophysical context includes the physical and biological environments of ecosystems, gene pools, geological areas, hydrological systems, and so forth. The sociocultural context includes cultural, economic, political, and other human systems that interact with the food and nutrition system. Inputs and outputs occur at all stages as the food and nutrition system interacts with its environments, providing resources for the system and accepting products (and byproducts).
