ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the ethical approach by considering the AIDS crisis. An individual with HIV who intends to have sex with another person has a duty to inform that person of his condition. The chapter argues in favor of positive reinforcement for responsible conduct that builds character, rather than relying on the negative threat of punishment. Economic and cultural circumstances may make it harder for couples to have safe sex. Men and women may be separated for long periods, working away from home to support their families, and in these circumstances men living where they work are more likely to have casual sex or sex with a prostitute. Under international law men and women have equal rights, so women have the same right as men to decline an invitation to have sex or to require the use of a condom as a condition for having sex.
