ABSTRACT

This part introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters. The part discusses the standards of international law to the security measures that the US government has pursued since 9/11. It suggests that the ethical battle can only be won by doing what is right: defending the rule of law, and seeking truth and reconciliation as well as justice. The part considers the issue of economic justice and a caring economy. It also suggests that the debilitating poverty of more than a billion people is evidence that global policies are contributing to an unfair distribution of economic benefits and burdens. The part focuses on public policies that will protect our ecosystems, yet these policies will not be possible without a much greater commitment by citizens and corporations to reduce pollution, increase recycling, and transform our expectations from economic growth to a sustainable way of life.
