ABSTRACT

In the context of environmental pollution in China, the most important elements are sulfur dioxide, which manifests as acid rain, and industrial wastewater, which pollutes water resources. This chapter illustrates the density level of sulfur dioxide in the air of major cities in China. The five worst areas in south are Guiyang, Chongqing, Yichang, Yibin, and Wuzhou. China's "atmospheric environment quality standard" establishes three levels: the first standard is for protected natural areas; the second is for urban residential and commercial areas and broad rural areas; the third is for industrial areas with severe air pollution. Acid rain in China occurs mainly south of the Yangtze River, east of the Qinghai-Tibet Highland, and in Sichuan Basin. The chapter then presents a summary of environmental projects included in the first-half three-year period of the Japanese government's fourth yen loan program for China. Environmental projects fall into three categories: water and sewer systems, antiatmospheric pollution measures, and water quality and pollution treatment.
