ABSTRACT

This chapter examines some near-term developments and their implications for future organizational structure and action. Learning theories at both the organizational and population levels of analysis pointed to explicit tradeoffs between exploring and commercially exploiting inventions and discoveries. "By uncoupling actions and outcomes, a chaotic process facilitates the construction of repertoires of action experiences, outcome beliefs, and contextual practices. These repertoires increase an organization's capacity for creative learning". Organizational learning perspectives offer promising approaches to understanding key components of evolutionary change. Organizational learning processes involve behaviors embedded in routines, recorded in collective organizational memory and transmitted from old to new individual members by formal and informal socialization mechanisms. Progressive legalization of the workplace evolved into management tools to control the workplace by shunting worker complaints into individualized resolutions. Learning is intimately intertwined with innovation and suffused with technology adoption and adaptation issues.
