ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book examines the implications of future demographic change in the United States for selected areas of American society. It examines the implications of three major demographic changes—the rate of population growth and of immigration in producing that growth; the growth of minority populations; and the aging of the population. The implications of these three demographic events have been examined in regard to their impact on the labor force; household structure, income, and poverty; business; and services, public revenues, and public expenditures in America. The projected growth in the population, households, and the labor force will be heavily dependent on immigration. Patterns of change in populations and households are related to income and poverty. The growth of the minority population, with its relative youth, can be seen as a potential source of opportunity for the United States.
