ABSTRACT

Thelingering cordial feelings that persist after a wonderful weekend spent away from the daily grind in some harried metropolis on a visit to the more serene setting of a nearby wine country landscape often obscure a visitor's perception of the working nature of such landscapes. Working landscapes are sculpted first by nature, then by the persistent labor and decisions of those who own and work the land. Most visitors remain unconcerned about the working landscape around them; they are focused mainly on the wine in their tasting glass. Visitors who are in California wine country during the week and are willing to get up early enough and drive around local towns will see day laborers gathering in public places, hoping to be picked up for a day's work in the vineyards. Many local wine country towns have a number of wine-related businesses.
