ABSTRACT

This chapter describes how acceleration for all students can be achieved only through a transformation of school and classroom cultures. It examines how assumptions encourage or discourage efforts to accelerate the learning of all students at both the school and classroom level. To turn schools around so that students' learning is accelerated involves a process of culture change, which by its nature requires listening to multiple voices. For schools, the shared goal becomes to accelerate the learning of all students; it is accomplished by listening to many voices and incorporating many perspectives in pursuit of the goal. Culturing change in schools and classrooms requires a clear understanding of the desired outcomes and careful attention to the change process—essentially the tending and nurturing of the change and a thorough understanding of the context in which the change occurs. The chapter explains why the school Sara attends is so different from Anna's and Richard's schools.
