ABSTRACT

Esther could never see me. Each time we planned to meet, she had to cancel. Strep and the flu ran through her children. Then she caught some of what they had. Then there was chicken pox for each child, followed by someone with lice and someone else with bronchitis. Her house sounded like a plague zone. She was sick as often as I had been in Hamilton. Ironic, I thought, that her thick spiritual life provided her with no immunity. Proverbs (3:7,8) says: “Fear the Lord and shun evil. It will be a cure for your body, a tonic for your bones.” Today Esther couldn’t see me because her pulse was racing. Even though she was eating more than usual, she kept losing weight.
