ABSTRACT

The rising standards of living have also raised satisfaction levels as many people solve the age-old worries of enough food to eat and clothes to wear. The desire for a better life has also seen a religious revival in the country, and for most Chinese the desire for prosperity and material things is complemented by an appeal to the supernatural for aid in that quest. From the perspective of observers of the Chinese contemporary cultural scene, however, nostalgia for the more orderly society of the pre-1979 years merges in this craze with "disgust with the rampant corruption and commercialism of today's China". Hong Kong's high standard of living meant that its lifestyle and speech quickly became the model for modernity of southern Chinese and the nation at large. Aside from the growth of bilingual profanity, moreover, village life has also changed in a variety of other ways.
