ABSTRACT

On April 2, 1991, I was tested for HIV and on April 5, I received positive results from two different Elisa tests on the same blood sample. One week later I got confirmatory results of a positive Western Blot. On January 2, 1995, my results from another Elisa test came back negative. I said how can this be? I had already scheduled an appointment for the next day with a new doctor in my hometown. He had the records showing I was HIV+. So when I went in there, I showed him the new records and said what do you make of this? He did another Elisa test which was negative also, so then we did a PCR, which is an HIV DNA test. I got the negative results of that the end of March. Then he wrote a letter saying I never had been positive. He couldn't really explain it. I had rheumatoid arthritis, but he said that wouldn't effect the Western Blot. Someone had to make a mistake and test someone else's blood. Accidents do happen in the lab. I've been through a lot of turmoil and was thinking about a lawsuit. It's a really hard thing; now I have to watch all my friends get sick.
