ABSTRACT
This chapter describes the notions that people have about why contests occur. Rodney King is a black man who is known by the police. He has been arrested by the police twice for violent crimes. He was a drunken paroled robber and briefly out of prison, he was also known for drunk driving and assaulting his wife. Rodney King's phrase "get along" has two referents that may be connected in practice but often are not, and certainly are analytically distinct. One is the hard-headed and the other is sentimental. Nor is the sentiment that good qualities emerge from strife confined to such apocalyptic settings. There is an opinion that the uncontested life is not worth living. The center of Gandhi's philosophy is the not uncommon idea that truth exists and it is single; one can meaningfully speak of the truth.
