ABSTRACT

This chapter examines seven strategies that are commonly referred to as mental skills. The research has also explicated specific criteria for athletes to get the most out of goal-setting. In particular, the acronym SMARTER signifies seven attributes that enable the value of goal-setting to be maximized. There are specific; measurable; accepted; realistic; time-limited; exciting; and recorded. Once the mental muscles have been optimally conditioned, those mental exercises become tools that athletes can place in their mental toolboxes. Additionally, athletes can use these mental tools to fine tune their “engines” to get the most out of their practice efforts and competitive performances. Because goal-setting is such a well-documented mental tool and it is tangible in its use, consultants are in a position to leverage it in several ways that will benefit athletes’ practice and competitive efforts. Making goals public increases accountability and allows for support and encouragement from others.
