ABSTRACT

This chapter is concerned with the development and detailed scrutiny of the interviewing database. Analysis is a process of gains and losses, and it is important that researchers report both aspects as fully as possibly. The development part of the chapter is the transcribing of the interviews and the logging of all other relevant data involved in the research. The chapter describes the three main parts: the transcription of the interviews; the logging of other data; and the task of analysis itself. The process of transcription will vary depending upon the aims and needs of the research design, and whether or not the transcription is undertaken by the interviewer, analyst, or both. Logging interview data deals with all the non-transcript data that is included in the database. Analysis is a combination of forming hypotheses, testing them and then interpreting the outcomes.
