ABSTRACT

This chapter shows that although the majority of the schools were visited by other professionals including speech therapists, physiotherapists, schools medical officers and educational psychologists, the frequency of visits varied considerably both from school to school and across local authorities. The majority of the schools were visited with varying degrees of frequency by representatives of different professional groups concerned with education, child health and the social services. Class teachers received the greatest help in terms of language assessment from speech therapists. Apart from these professionals from outside the school, teachers tended to rely upon their own classroom assistants for help with language assessment. The chapter presents the data concerning the frequency of school visits by professionals and the kinds of support they provided for language assessment and language teaching.
