ABSTRACT

Listen! Seven sixes are forty-two, seven sevens are forty-nine, seven eights are fifty-six . . . We are in a secondary modern school and are standing outside a classroom in which Form iC is engaged in an activity which appears on the time-table as mathematics. Let us disguise ourselves as H.M. Inspectors or other distinguished visitors and take a look inside the room and see what is going on. The teacher, being in no position to resent our intrusion, welcomes us, sets the class an exercise to go on with and then explains the situation.
