ABSTRACT

This chapter sees a return to the literature review with the focus on writing the chapter rather than the review process itself. For every chapter the purpose and the organisation is discussed. The purpose of the literature chapter is to situate the study within the field of knowledge. The organisation of the chapter should take the form of a structured argument using sources as supporting evidence which may be facilitated by metatext; for example, by using an introduction and headings. Examples of introductions and headings are provided. The chapter provides a description of the characteristics of high and low scoring dissertation literature reviews. The important issues of critical reading and writing are outlined. One important aspect of the literature review is that it identifies a gap in knowledge that the study will fill.
