ABSTRACT

Chapter 13 looks at the introduction and the conclusion to the dissertation. It also includes a section on the reference list. The introduction to the dissertation, while not formally assessed, is very important. The introduction is the first part of the dissertation read by the examiner and it is here that impressions are formed. If the introduction is disorganised, the examiner may expect the rest of the dissertation to disorganised as well. The introduction tends to move from general background to the study, the purpose of the study, to research questions and an outline of the dissertation. Chapter 13 includes a sample introduction with analysis of the generic structure. The dissertation conclusion presents an overview of research, a discussion about the significance and implications for practice and future research. The chapter also includes an annotated conclusion.
