ABSTRACT

Master’s dissertations are usually supervised by academic staff from the department who have expertise in the topic area. With large numbers of master’s students doing dissertations contact time is often limited. This chapter provides advice for maximising the supervision experience, starting with a common understanding of the roles of the supervisor and student. Failure to clarify respective roles can result in problems. Supervision and feedback is most important at the following stages of the research: project design, the research proposal, collecting and analysing data, writing the dissertation and assessment feedback. The chapter includes advice for getting ready for supervision meetings and a sample supervision summary that can be used as a template.
