ABSTRACT

The overture, the introduction, sets the stage for the book by detailing its premise and objectives. The introduction also contextualizes the topic in up-to-date data on the U.S. opera industry. The chapter includes a brief historical overview of opera in the U.S., highlighting people of color's contributions to the art form as artists and managers. Chapter 1 also synthesizes scholarly literature on race in opera to support the book's significance and contributions to the literature. Furthermore, the introduction articulates the author's positionality as a person of color very well educated in music and opera as a rationale for why he is examining the topic from a place of love.
