ABSTRACT
In Act I, Chapter 2, in addition to identifying the factors that advanced and impeded his career, Henry Akina's narrative details specific strategies he used to successfully navigate challenges in his career. The chapter also explores the complexity of racial identity and its impact on a person's career, especially given that Mr. Akina identifies as Chinese, German, and Hawaiian. This complexity gives him an interesting perspective on race in the U.S. For example, in one conversation more than ten years ago he asked me, “Why do all conversations about race in this country emanate from the Eastern seaboard?”
