ABSTRACT

In Act VI, Chapter 7, Maestro Willie Anthony Waters' career narrative identifies the factors that he believes advanced his career, as well as barriers that he faced in the pursuit of an executive career in opera. One attribute of Maestro Waters that stood out in our conversation was his encyclopedic knowledge of opera. This became a strategy that allowed him to successfully fulfill his role as an executive opera manager of color. Also of note is that Maestro Waters and Linda Jackson worked together at the Connecticut Opera. Two out of four Black opera executives working together at the same opera company suggests that a formal professional network is a strategy worthy of greater attention and probing provided in this book.
