ABSTRACT

Giacomo Suriano's entry into office takes place in a difficult period for Venice, the Wars of Italy, a train of conflicts and truces that bestrides the Italian peninsula. The War of the League of Cambrai is playing out in the Lagoon's immediate environs. Between 1509 and 1511, the countryside of Padua and the Veneto, a few kilometres from Venice and Murano, are the theatre of operations. During the War of the League of Cambrai, the Venetian territories that fell to the enemy or returned into the Venetian sphere saw the proliferation of these images of Saint Mark in urban spaces, signs of resistance to the occupation or of attachment to the Serenissima. The Snowball Revolt stems from two conflicts: the lower folk flaunt their hostility toward their patrician rulers; and the inhabitants of a subject community defy their overlord.
