ABSTRACT

This chapter uses the framework of the seven modalities defined in Chapter 3 to structure a classification of the digital score. The class types have been determined by significant step-changes in how a digital score affects musicking and creativity, using the seven modalities as the guiding parameters. The classification is further sub-divided into three parts based on the nature of how these behave inside musicking. The aim is to present a clear taxonomy of the nature and creative opportunities presented by the different types of digital score, so that it can be used to analyse, reflect on, identify or inspire innovation and novel creative practices inside musicking. These are: Part A—Referential Screen; Part B—Interactive Systems; and Part C—Co-operative Code. The flow modality is dealt with through a series of reflections from other musicians. These were collected as part of the research for this book and explain different meanings in the flow modality across a range of music experiences.
