ABSTRACT

There is a causal link between music and spatial intelligence. Much of music is mathematical. Music is nothing but unconscious arithmetic. The notes in music are divisions of a whole and have certain numbers of beats. Measures in music are intended to include the correct number of beats according to the meter signature. Melody in music is often patterns of sound. Many children’s songs include counting. As children sing these songs, they are reinforcing their understanding of counting, and they are learning about their American heritage through music. In psychological research, music and rhythm have been shown to benefit the rote memorization process. Music has repeating patterns that children can discover both aurally and visually. Rhythm patterns are often repeated within a song, as are melodic patterns.
