ABSTRACT

Each of the arts uses unique materials and elements. Music composers use elements such as melody, rhythm, form, tone color, tempo, and harmony to organize sounds across time. One of the most commonly used methods to study related arts is through shared historic time periods. The arts all make use of unity, variety, and balance strategies to enhance the aesthetic qualities of their medium. Color in visual art can be repeated, while movements in dance can achieve repetition. Eastman Johnson was an American painter best known for his paintings depicting ordinary people from everyday life. Using the technical skills he learned in Europe, he created masterworks showing American life during his time. The Early Scholar, painted around 1865, reflects his sensitivity to real people, their emotions, and their activities. Louis Marcoussis was born in Poland but moved to Paris in 1903. While studying art, he made a very comfortable living as a successful illustrator and cartoonist for Parisian fashion magazines.
