ABSTRACT

The teacher who helps students learn to attend aurally is giving them a gift that will foster success throughout their school careers, and perhaps throughout their lives. This chapter gives just a taste of the types of music activities that meet Dr. Baranoff’s challenge to meet the mental, physical, emotional, and social development needs of students. Skilled teachers know to involve their students to make sure they hear the directions. The Echo Game is an excellent tool to use to get students’ attention and improve listening skills. Singing is a great method for establishing community within a classroom. Many teachers find that a wonderful way to start the school day is to have students sing a positive, upbeat song together.
