ABSTRACT

Musical training brings a dramatic impact on the brain’s structure, enhancing memory, spatial reasoning, and language skills. Learning to play a musical instrument seems to be one of the most effective forms of brain training. Music boosts certain brain chemicals, such as dopamine, sometimes called the brain’s “motivation molecule.” The neurotransmitter dopamine is increased when listening to music. This is the same chemical that makes us feel good when we are eating chocolate or running a long distance. The cerebellum calls up the memory of watching and listening when the piano teacher shows how to play a new piece of music.
