ABSTRACT
This chapter aims to explore the roles of English as a lingua franca (ELF) in, and thus its impact on, the final presentation of literary translation using the English translation of Taiwanese literature as a special case study. The status of English as a global language has actually already been confirmed by the patterns of translation globally. Deletion is one of the most frequently used translation strategies in the English translation of Wintry Night, especially in the treatment of the detailed descriptions of geographical locations in the original text. The chapter examines how the role of ELF can impact on the final presentation of a translated work with reference to a case study of the translation of the Taiwanese novel, Wintry Night. The dominance of the English language is reflected in the translation flow in the world system. Li Chen argues that translating into English—the lingua franca—is essential for promoting Taiwan literature on the global stage.
