ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the importance of using research findings as an evidence base to support your writing and to allow you to develop justified, authoritative conclusions throughout your work. It takes you through the key stages of research, including dissecting or setting a question, the role of textbook reading, then more in-depth academic research making use of Google Scholar, your institutional library, and primary legal sources, including cases and legislation using the legal databases. It provides support with note-taking and how to take those notes and to develop them into a plan and a first draft of an answer. It is a practical guide that you may tailor to your needs as you develop your own approach to research and become increasingly confident in it.
