ABSTRACT

Ingenious and individual performances of singers are integral to Wagner’s Gesamtkunstwerk ideals. By the first performances of his final opera Parsifal, while he was still disappointed in the technical deficiencies and the aesthetics of pictorial representation of his time, Wagner had been able to instil in his singers a major achievement of his vision: an intense concentration on dramatic motivation. 1 And in the opera’s sole major female role of Kundry we can see a full embodiment of this ideal.
