ABSTRACT

Part Two of this chapter provides a context for the ‘vintage’ jazz-oriented media which informs current dance styles within Europe. This chapter especially highlights the current musical aesthetics and practices of the Herräng Dance Camp, with a focus upon the complex intermediated values expressed through a relation to mostly Black American swing music recordings and the current European Lindy Hop professionals, who combine their roles as teachers at this prestigious camp with other (virtual and live) performance contexts throughout Europe. This focus upon current dancers aims to elevate the role of jazz dancers within European culture, while also drawing attention to the critical relation to recorded and audiovisual media paid by this professional, trans-local community.
