ABSTRACT

As you finish this book, you might think all we care about is making money. That we’re some sort of top-hatted musician/academic capitalists focussed solely on raking in the bucks. That’s far from true. Besides being professors, we’re both practicing musicians with established careers. But we’ve been doing this long enough to realise that the music and the business are two sides of the same coin. Music is an art. Musicians are artists. We’ve both been lucky enough to make music with some amazing and inspiring performers. But art alone doesn’t put food on the table. It doesn’t pay the rent. It doesn’t give you the luxury to actually be an artist, because you have to concentrate on the 9-to-5 day job.
