ABSTRACT

Students need to consider how their brain works when they practise. Students need to know how their body reacts. Effective practice varies from instrument to instrument and from person to person. Students physically practise guitar differently to how they practise piano. The process of creating memorable performances does not start when students turn up at the gig, instrument in hand. It begins with the preparation. It begins with their personal rehearsal and their group practice. As a professional music practitioner, students need to practise every day. Sometimes students will be in the zone with their practise, and it will barely seem like practice at all. Students' practice must also be effective. While there is evidence that the most skilled musicians have had more time to practice, the picture is different for students playing at the same level.
