ABSTRACT

Group rehearsal is a significant step in preparing for a memorable and successful gig. This is where students really start imagining and creating their performance. A successful performance is a performance that meets several characteristics. Being well prepared and rehearsed with the music, being familiar with the music and style students are performing. It is hard to be prescriptive about rehearsals because each ensemble rehearses differently. Consider a pit orchestra versus a band rehearsing up new songs. A pit orchestra needs to get through a lot of notated music quickly. There are two books in particular that will offer further insights. Garwood Whaley’s The Music Director’s Cookbook offers insights in rehearsal and planning from the point of view of music educators. John Colson’s Conducting and Rehearsing the Instrumental Music Ensemble talks about rehearsal from a classical perspective.
