ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the efforts of the Schoolsite Council, the group charged with approving the yearly plan for the school and deciding how to spend a supplemental academic budget. This group provided key opportunities for parents to make a difference, and its leadership consistently prioritized measures aimed at moving the school toward greater equity, by providing enhanced academic and socioemotional support to its diverse student body. When a Spanish-dominant member joined the group, her participation was ironically impeded by the interpreting services put in place to ensure her access, but she expressed satisfaction with the amount she was able to learn about educational resources.
