ABSTRACT

While the preceding chapters of the book have attested that mitigation is ubiquitous in verbal, digital, and written interactions and communication, and that it is found in all levels of communication, Chapter 9 concludes by way of a reflection on linguistic mitigation. It espouses that attenuation is influenced by interpersonal relations and that this phenomenon has expressions, devices, and strategies that, when analyzed in context, allow us to understand the pressures that motivate its expression. Since the text has explained the wide range and scope of the linguistic devices and strategies that are pervasive in communication, the objectives of Chapter 9 are specific: It aims to recall various aspects of mitigation, reflect on what has been narrowly described as mitigation and propose a brief declaration about attenuation, a rally that can impact the way this phenomenon is investigated and taught. The chapter addresses these aspects by way of questions so that readers can reflect upon them.
