ABSTRACT

The primary goal of Chapter 6 is to gather some thoughts regarding how to capture mitigation in oral or written communication. In it, readers will find a discussion and recommendations regarding methodological approaches that have been used to investigate linguistic mitigation. In particular, the chapter anchors its discussion and recommends the use of a mixed-method approach (qualitative and quantitative).

The chapter also presents a guide on how to collect data and the constellation of factors that need to be taken into account when investigating this linguistic phenomenon.

There is a discussion on how to elicit data, the choices of protocols employed by researchers, and ways in which the field can be advanced.
